Human quality of life has benefited tremendously from the manufacturing improvements that began in antiquity and have surged since the industrial revolution. Our lives are enriched by everything from the clothing we wear to our physical devices and computing infrastructure. In the coming decades, billions of people around the world will enter the global middle class, with more demand for the material wealth we take for granted. At the same time, computational demands will continue to increase, and computing will increasingly be a core aspect of solving every global problem and modernizing every industry. We’ll need to improve our manufacturing techniques to be more environmentally sustainable while addressing the challenges of global supply chains. Technological advances offer us the tools to do all of this.
